Student Perspectives of Online Program in Safety and Motivation toward Online Safety Training:A Mixed Method Study

摘要

This mixed methods study is to investigate college student perspectives on online safety and their motivation toward online safety training through the lens of Protection Motivation Theory(PMT).A sequential mixed method design was used in this study.A survey instrument, which includes items on campus security measures, past associations with crime on the campus, and the mode of online safety training with relation to their beliefs about their own response efficacy, was created and validated by university professors of educational research.A pilot survey was conducted on a university campus in the southeastern United States in addition to individual interviews to provide further understanding of student perspectives on online safety and their motivation toward online safety training. The preliminary results indicate students feel campus is a safe place because they see safety measures around campus, which has negative effects on their motivations to participate in online safety training program. The study also revealed that student perspective and motivation are closely related to students' feeling of a positive response efficacy.
