The invention relates to a device (1) for the continuous production of biochar by the pyrolysis of biomass under the exclusion of oxygen. The device (1) comprises: a vertically mounted reactor (2), which has a reactor interior (16) bounded by a reactor jacket (12) and having an upper feed zone (161), a lower withdrawal zone (163) and a process space (162) located between these; a feed device (3) for feeding biomass to the upper feed zone (161); a withdrawal device (4) for withdrawing biochar from the lower withdrawal zone (163); and a heating system (23) located in the reactor interior (16). The heating system (23) comprises a plurality of outer heating bars (24a), which are arranged in the vicinity of the reactor jacket (12) vertically distributed around the circumference of the reactor (2), and at least one inner heating bar (24b), which is arranged vertically in or in the vicinity of the centre (27) of the reactor interior (16). A control device (61) is provided to control the operation of the device (1). The control device (61) controls the actuation of the feed device (3) and the withdrawal device (4) and controls the temperature of the heating bars (24a, 24b), according to temperatures measured at distributed locations in the reactor interior (16), to adjust the holding time and pyrolytic reaction of the biomass according to the prevailing operating conditions, ambient conditions and the particular biomass being used.
