A number of embodiments of a precision tuning algorithm and apparatus are disclosed for precisely and rapidly depositing an accurate amount of charge on a floating gate of a nonvolatile memory cell in a vector matrix multiplication (VMM) array in an artificial neural network. Selected cells can thereby be programmed with extreme precision to maintain one of N different values.
