The spectral computed tomography imaging system 102 includes a radiation source 112 that emits emitted X-rays and a detector array 114 that detects the emitted X-rays and produces spectral data. The spectrum imaging system further includes a memory 134 containing a virtual non-contrast image enhancement module 136 containing computer executable instructions including a neural network trained to generate a virtual non-contrast image with improved image quality. The neural network is trained with the training spectral data and the training non-contrast image generated from the non-contrast scan. The spectral imaging system further includes a processor 132 that processes spectral data with a trained neural network to produce a virtual non-contrast image with improved image quality.
