166,995. Fryer, F. G., and Rowntree & Co., Ltd. April 28, 1920. Continuous-discharge apparatus with stationary containers.-Relates to thrashing or high-speed beating-machines for thrashing and beating liquids, preferably in the presence of air, and more particularly for thrashing mixtures of cocoa liquor, sugar, and other ingredients in the manufacture of chocolate fondants. The machine is of the type in which a high-speed rotor works within a stator, the material being passed through the narrow clearance-space between the rotor and the stator and thrashed or beaten by blades, pins, projections, or the like on the rotor or stator, or both; or the rotor or stator may be stepped or corrugated. According to the invention, means are provided for supplying air or gas under pressure to the liquid in course of treatment with the object, for example, when thrashing chocolate, of developing the aroma. Preferably means for regulating the supply of air or gas are also provided. As shown in Fig. 1, fan-vanes 43 are provided in the body of the rotor 4 to drive air, which enters through openings 31 in the base 6 of the stator, through inlets 28 in the cylindrical wall 9 of the rotor. The vanes 43 are carried by an annular plate 44 which is secured in a recess in the top inside surface of the rotor by studs 45, Fig. 2, passing through slots 46. The plate 44 has a flange 47 provided with holes corresponding with the holes 28 so that by turning the plate the quantity of air passing through the holes 28 can be regulated. A worm 36 carried by an extension 37 of the rotor shaft 3 works within the feedhopper 32, the outer casing 33 of which is provided with air-inlet holes 38 adjustable by means of a sleeve 39 which can be turned by means of handles 41. In another arrangement, Fig. 5, an air inlet 40 in the outer casing 33 of the feedhopper 32 is connected by a valved pipe to a fan or blower, and the space between the two members 20, 21 of the cover-plate 11 of the stator is divided into two concentric parts by means of an annular projection 55 on the member 20. The air passes through inlets 56 in the member 20 to the clearance-space between the rotor and stator, and the outer concentric space may serve as a cooling or heating jacket. The invention is particularly applicable to the machines described in Specifications 165,844 and 166,994.
