Class 85 To reduce fire risks due to dust in mine workings, the dust is made innocuous by a damped salt which absorbs the dust when it settles thereon. The salt, such as sodium chloride or a hygroscopic salt, is spread in a dry state over the floor of the mine and is subsequently damped. A supplementary salt crust may also cover the timbering, this crust either being formed of damp salt which is held on the timbering, if necessary, by an adhesive substance, such as a sulphite obtaine from the residues resulting from the manufacture of cellulose, or by spraying the timbering with an aqueous solution having a high salt concentration. The salt surfaces so formed in the mine are continuously or intermittently moistened, either by direct spraying or by absorption from moistened ventilating air. At places where there are dust concentrations, the air may be drawn through a filter impregnated with salt.
