A porous carbon electrode in which the distribution of pore radii deviates from the Gauss error function only in that the larger pores, e.g. those exceeding 12m in radius, are less frequent than is required by the Gauss function, is made by passing a thin liquid glue or resin solution having a surface tension such that it cannot enter pores of less than a determined radius through the electrode which has the pores radii distributed according to the Gauss function, and allowing the glue or resin to harden, e.g. by heating where the resin is thermosetting or by carbonizing.ALSO:A porous sintered electrode in which the distribution of pore radii deviates from the Gauss error function only in that the larger pores, e.g. those exceeding 12 m in radius, are less frequent than is required by the Gauss function, is made by depositing on an electrode comprising sintered metal particles in which the pore radii are distributed according to the Gauss function, particles of the same metal but of smaller size and forcing the particles under pressure into the larger pores where they are then sintered in position.ALSO:A porous carbon or sintered metal electrode for a gas fuel cell in which the distribution of pore radii deviates from the Gauss error function only in that the larger pores, e.g. those exceeding 12m in radius, are less frequent than is required by the Gauss function, is made by passing a thin liquid glue or resin solution, having a surface tension such that it cannot enter pores of less than a predetermined radius, through an electrode which has the pore radii distributed according to the Gauss function, and allowing the glue or resin to harden, e.g. by heating if the resin is thermo-hardening, or by carbonising.
