Plates 7 of a filter press are unstacked by means of brackets 18 as the plates being engaged by conveyor screw sleeves 11 which are carried by and rotate with shafts 10 running the length of the press and which are also axially displaceable along the shaft so that plates may be unstacked one by one. The conveyor member is longer than the length of travel of a plate so that after movement of a plate that plate remains in engagement with the conveyor and the resulting reaction (since the plate has to remain stationary, Fig. 4) causes axial displacement of the conveyor so that it moves out of engagement with the plate and into engagement with the next following plate. A spring 21 urges the conveyor upon commencement of the unstacking against the bracket 18 of the first plate. The axial movement of the conveyor is braked by either brake linings on the shaft and/or on the bore of the conveyor, or by manufacturing the shaft of suitable brake material, or by fitting a spring 19 on the conveyor to engage in notches 20 in the shaft. A resilient disc 23 on the conveyor prevents two plates from moving at once. The plates have beaded edges 5, sludge channels 6 and are lined with filter cloth.
