Compounds of the general formula wherein R is hydrogen or a halogen; RSP1/SP, RSP2/SP, RSP3/SP, RSP4/SP and RSP5/SP are hydrogen, a halogen, an alkyl residue having 1 to 5 carbon atoms or a XHggroup, X being an anion; the compounds being labelled with radio-active mercury, are prepared by reacting a radio-active ionic mercury compound and an excess of the fluorescein derivative. Specified compounds prepared by the process of the invention are: difluoresceinyl mercury; bis - (2SP1/SP,7SP1/SP - dibromofluoresceinyl) mercury; bis - (4SP1/SP,5SP1/SP - dibromofluoresceinyl) mercury; bis - (4SP1/SP,5SP1/SP - diiodofluoresceinyl) mercury; bis - (2SP1/SP,7SP1/SP - diiodofluoresceinyl) mercury; bis - (tetrabromofluoresceinyl) mercury; and bis - (tetraiodofluoresceinyl) mercury. Each of these may be labelled with SP203/SPHg or SP197/SPHg.
