The screen is cleaned by a comb 2 mounted on the downstream side of the screen with its teeth extending through the screen. In its inoperative position the comb is engaged in a recess 6 in the base of the channel. On a cleaning stroke the comb is raised upwardly on its support 3 from bottom to top of the screen and then continues upwards on the support whilst the support itself is moved downstream on sliding support 8 by pneumatic piston 11 to a discharge position 12 where the comb has been turned upside down so that solids fall off. The comb support may be pivotally mounted as an alternative to the illustrated slidable mounting.
