Breathing mask for use in arctic climates has a mask part covering the person's mouth and nose and bearing a heat exchanger through which flow the inhaled and exhaled air, to use the heat and moisture contained in the respired air and transfer them to the inhaled air. The heat exchanger is a removably attached bundle of stacked woven metal wire nettings, through which the air flows in alternate directions, as in a counterflow regenerator. The nettings are 50 x 60 mm size; a stack of 27 of them is 15mm thick and weighs 65 g. They give minimum resistance to the to and fro motion of air, but the wire nettings have good heat conductivity and a high heat capacity.
