Protection for buildings against large horizontal dynamic forces, and partic. against earthquakes, consists of a system of frictional supports in the form of mutually supporting blocks for the buildings or their foundations. The top blocks are metal plates, the others have a top metal plate, an elastomer sheet and a lower plate to distribute the load. There is also a means for displacement between them at the faces of their opposite supports. The static and dynamic coeffts. of friction of the surface in contact with each other lie between min. 0.08 (tolerable for the permissible displacements) and max. 0.5 (tolerable for the threshold internal resistance of the building). System limits the effects of horizontal earthquake or explosion waves to a set known value, use of appropriate frictional supports enables application to other earthquake conditions than those preselected.
