Aluminium-strontium master alloy - produced by adding strontium encased in aluminium foil, to the aluminium melt

Prodn. comprises heating an Al melt to 750-880 degrees C, adding 0.005-0.1% Be to the melt, covering the surface of the Al melt with a salt which is inert to the melt, adding metallic Sr encased in Al foil, stirring the melt without disturbing the salt cover, and casting into the required shape. The method is simple and hte yield in Sr is at least 85%. The alloy is suitable for the modification of pure Al-Si casting alloy and also Al-Si-Mg alloys.
