1453989 Explosion moulding K E ARVIDSSON 25 July 1974 [3 Aug 1973] 32974/74 Heading B5A [Also in Division F3] A mixture of a combustible gaseous substance, oxygen, and particles of a combustible or explosive substance is formed in a combustion chamber 1 and is ignited to explode or detonate the mixture, e.g. for compressing porous substances such as wood which is undergoing impregnation or for moulding plastics. A string 13 of packages of explosive particles (Fig. 2 and 3, not shown) is fed from a reel 12 and the packages are separated, e.g. by peeling apart two enclosing strips 28 (Fig. 4, not shown) or by severing interconnecting portions by a knife 31. A package falls through a funnel 15 into a feed chamber 10 from where it is released into an evacuated space 9 where it bursts to its higher internal pressure. Combustible gas such as acetylene or butane and air are passed through the space 9 to mix with the released particles and carry them into chamber 1 where the mixture is exploded by an electric spark 4, a heater, or a laser beam. The chamber is surrounded by liquid 1c and is vented through a pipe 3.
