The engineering workshop vice is of a welded steel construction with demountable reversable and interchangeable jaw-pieces (4). The jaw-pieces have alternatively usable opposed faces (17, 18) of striated tempered steel and copper-lined construction. The slide (2) may be introduced into either of opposed extremities of the stable jaw-block (1), further' extending the available range of inter-jaw dimensions. A unique 'W' section (8) fixed in the static jaw-block (1) by bolts (5) through vertical slots, may locate an inverted channel section slide (2) with the fixed nut (13), and may be adjusted to take up "play" due to wear and tear. The jaws may be mounted on rectangular hollow section posts which slide and clip (21) into similar sections (6) fixed on the vice.
