The tool is in the form of a pair of pincers. Two arms (10,11) pivot around a transverse axis (12) and the jaws (17,18) are forced apart by the action of a stiff, curved steel band (32) which also serves as a handle for the instrument. The opening of the jaws is set by a rectangular collar (19) which fits around the shoulders (31) on the arms in different positions, each one defining a different jaw separation distance. The position of the collar is controlled by an axial rod (26) which is moved longitudinally by means of a small handle (27). The faces of the jaws (36,37) are shaped with recesses and ridges to grip the appropriate tools which engage the cable-connector locking mechanisms. In a variation, a block, fitted to the curved handle, carries a self-supporting fibre optic cable whose luminous outlet can be positioned close to the area of manipulation to facilitate manoevering.
