At least one hydraulically stressed compression spring, in a brake cylinder, and pair of brake shoes to grip a rail, are incorporated in the brake assembly for vehicles guided on rails in mines. The shoes are mounted on the ends of brake levers, which have a roller, at the other end, to press against a cylinder-linked wedge face. On a floor track, with two rails (3), the brake cylinder (13), and a stress cylinder (18), are aligned across these. The wedge faces are part of a core (19) at the end of the brake cylinder. The rollers (32) are pressed on this by a pair of brake levers (34,35). These act in longitudinally directed, vertical pivotal planes, with their brake shoes (15) above and below a horizontal flange (5) on the appropriate rail.
