Pref. the subject is a hologram held in a subject container. The film is fed from a reel over rollers and between front and rear guides past an aperture at one side of the subject container. The drive movement may be continuous or intermittent. For a continuous drive rate of thirty to forty centimetres per second and a pulse duration of fifty nanoseconds, a pulse repetition frequency of one pulse per second is used. A pulsed ruby laser provides a suitable light source. The laser light beam is split by two semi-transparent mirrors into reference and object beams. The reference beam is directed onto the film and the object beam towards the subject. The film is irradiated by reference waves and light reflected from the subject so that a hologram is formed in the film.
