Process is effected by coating a prepd. carcase with a rubber bonding layer, and applying a straight or annular profiled tread strip having a roughened lower surface formed during moulding of the tread strip. The roughened lower surface has a good adhesive capacity, and is composed of projections and hollows, this together forming a network of paths. After the removal of any gaseous inclusions between the layers by use of vacuum, the side openings, in the superimposed layers are sealed, or closed by applying a mechanical pressure on the tread strip. The resulting assembly is then heated in an autoclave to volcanic the rubber bonding layer. Simple method providing a strong bond between the tread strip and carcase, at a relatively low capital and running cost.
