PURPOSE:To simplify control and to make a complicated algorithm unnecessary, by controlling a laser for excitation and a voltage contorlled oscillator by different outputs of separate optical detectors. CONSTITUTION:The optical detector 12 detects the intensity of a beam of light transmitting an atom beam in a level selection area D, and supplies a detected output to a laser control part 13. The laser control part 13 controls the oscillation wavelength of the laser 2 for excitation so as to take the minimum value of the detected output, in other words, to excite the atom beam most effectively. As a result, since the voltage controlled oscillator VCO9 being stabilized by the output of the optical detector 4 is separated from the control loop of the laser 2 for excitation, it is possible to make the complicated algorithm such as the mutual operation of the VCO9 and the laser 2 for excitation by switching the control, and to stabilize the oscillation wavelength of the laser 2 for excitation easily and surely.
