PURPOSE:To prolong the life of the sol prepd. from a metallic alkoxide and to stabilize the sol by thickening the sol formed by the partial hydrolysis of a zirconium alkoxide to a specific concn. CONSTITUTION:The sol formed by the partial hydrolysis of the zirconium alkoxide is thickened to at least =5 times the concn. in the prepn. stage. Consequently, the thickened sol is stabilized and the life is prolonged. The reason thereof lies in a mechanism that a polycondensation reaction progresses and the relative ratio of the unreacted alkyl group to the zirconium decreases to provide the stability to water.
