PURPOSE: To provide a reliable space diversity system. CONSTITUTION: Microcellular stations 107 and 110 cover small geographical ranges 102 and 103 and establish bidirectional links between subscriber stations 109 and 111 of mobile telephones and a main base station 100. Each microcellular station is provided with a transmitter which generates a signal destined for the main base station. A radio signal from a mobile station which is received by a diversity antenna 116 of the microcellular station 107 is coupled to another signal from this mobile station after frequency change. In the transmitter of the microcellular station, a modulation optical carrier signal is generated by coupled signals. The frequency band of a signal received from the microcellular station is restored to the original frequency by a frequency converter arranged in the main base station. Since oscillators of the same reference frequency are used for frequency change and conversion in microcellular stations and the main base station, consistency of channels is achieved.
