A device for mechanically fracturing blocks of rock in quarries consists of a hydraulic cylinder/piston unit (1), to the cylinder housing (2) of which a pipe (14) is coaxially fastened in a detachable manner. The shells (38, 39) formed by the longitudinal slots (36, 37) have wedge-shaped surfaces (34, 35) on their inside. In the pipe (14), a rod (22) is arranged so as to be longitudinally displaceable by the piston (3) of the cylinder/piston unit (1). In the region of the wedge-shaped surfaces (34, 35) of the pipe (14), the rod (22) has wedge-shaped surfaces (42, 43) corresponding with these. By longitudinally displacing the rod (22), the wedge-shaped surfaces (34, 35) or (42, 43) slide on one another, as a result of which the jaws (40, 41) of the shells (38, 39) are moved transversely by elastic widening of the shells (38, 39).
