Composting e.g. municipal waste - by moistening coarse fraction after initial sieving and sieving to separate paper fibres which are added to fire fraction and composted
The material is sepd. in a first sieving process (1) into a fine fraction contg. most of the organic components and a coarse fraction contg. the re-usable components. The coarse fraction is moistened and undergoes a second sieving process (2) in which a moist paper fibre fraction is sepd. The moist fibre fraction is mixed with the fine fraction and the obtd. mixt. is composted. Re-usable components, e.g. glass, plastic, etc., are sorted from the coarse fraction before the second seiving process. The moistening is by means of a water bath, by spraying, or by mixing with a substance having a high water content. The high moisture content substance may be a seepage water, animal slurry or sludge whose nutrient content is advantageous to the composting process. The moistening may take place during the first or second sieving process, and may be carried out in regions of the first seiving process containing sieves of different mesh sizes. USE/ADVANTAGE - Used in the prepn. of e.g. municipal waste for composting. The suitability of the fine fraction for composting is improved by increasing its moisture content and the vol. of coarse material to be disposed of is reduced by removing its paper content.
