PURPOSE: To obtain a method and a system for detecting bacteria in a sample by light scattering and absorbing time resolved measuring method. ;CONSTITUTION: The system tests a plurality of samples by providing an exciting signal to be modulated, being introduced to each sample 32 and collected at a point arranged across each sample. The system processes 62 the amplitude and the phase of a collected signal and determines the time characteristics, the modulation and the phase of a signal passed through a sample by means of a computer 70. Subsequently, the time characteristics are compared with those collected at a previous moment of time, and bacteria are identified by taking advantages of the face that the presence of bacteria causes a significant variation in the time characteristics, the modulation and the phase. Electromagnetic radiation to be modulated is introduced to the sample using a diode laser 30 and a signal for determining the phase, and the amplitude is produced using a multichannel plate photomultiplier 40.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1994,JPO
