Cooled waffles are retained within the cooling section for a given storage time together with waffles still to be cooled, to be passed through the cooling section again at least once. The waffle movement density in the cooling section is increased by a multiple during the waffle storage time. After the storage time, the waffles are extracted from the cooling section by an amount greatly over the number of waffles to be passed in for cooling until the waffle movement density within the cooling section matches the incoming level, and then the amt removed is reduced to correspond with the waffles entering the cooling stage to be cooled.
