A sub-calibre impact shell, used in exercises, comprises a shell body (1), a cone-shaped nose part (2) and a shell point (3). The shell point is made from zirconium or a zirconium alloy and functins as a target signature. Its volume is very small, less than one cc, but pref. less than 0.5cc. As there is an additional fuse any burning or ignition is avoided. The shell body (1) is of the armour piercing type.. USE/ADVANTAGE - The shell is intended for use in exercises when, although target marking is required, none of the usual consequent burning is desired. The claimed shell produces such a target signature on impacting with hardened steel, however without any burning.
