To control a permanent magnet excited synchronous machine (1), a pilot angle is adjusted between the armature current and voltage (independently of the current waveform) in proportion to the output of a phase current regulator (9) so that the machine is driven according to the load conditions either in the normal regime or in the field-weakened regime. The output signal from the current regulator has a degree of modulation and is used to control a pulse width modulator (13). The pilot angle is adjusted according to an algorithm. The initial setting for the current regulator depends on the pilot angle and the rotor position. ADVANTAGE - Improved control procedure.
