Elastic shear waves of sufficient amplitudes are transferred into the ground material using a freezing technique and via torsion stimulators and tubular rods. Access holes for the transfer and for transducers are made with optional boring or penetration methods. Additional optional fluids can be pressed in during boring and afterwards. A tube of any desired type can be inserted at the transfer point using any desired method. Heat can be extracted from the base in the transfer region over a limited section of the tube using a coolant. USE/ADVANTAGE - In situ measurement of packing density or consistency of soft ground. Freezing is used to improve coupling of shear waves.
