A diagnostic system containing an image acquisition unit (1), an imagecoding and registration unit (2), and an image information retrieval unit(9). The image acquisition unit (1) acquires moving image information in theform of a series of time sequential images concerning an object to beresearched (3). The image coding and registration unit (2) is equipped firstwith a coding unit (4) for the conversion of the series in the timesequential images in a first data stream corresponding to the firstconversion rule that has been optimised for the compression of the movingimage information, and second, a coding unit (6) for the conversion of theimage information in a second data stream equivalent to a second conversionrule that has been optimised for the compression of the still imageinformation. The average amount of information per coded image for the firstcoding unit (4) is lower than for the second coding unit (6). The imagecoding and registration unit (2) is further equipped with a registration unit(7) for the registration of the first and second data streams on the sameregistration carrier.IMAGE
