Combined vaccine against the causative agents of AIDS, bilharziosis and tuberculosis contain as active ingredient 'masked' bacteria. Also new are 'masked' BCG cells. Bacteria are masked by binding to their surface partially oxidised polysaccharide (I) which in turn is covered with viral or parasitic proteins, peptides or synthetic epitopes. (I) is esp. dextran (but can also be starch, cellulose, pectin, lipopolysaccharide etc.) and bacteria are esp. BCG (but other attenuated mycobacteria can be used. USE/ADVANTAGE - This vaccine provides greater non-specific and specific humoral or cellular immune response to the specified organisms. It can be used for prevention or (after infection) for protection, and does not require an adjuvant
