The call continuation method includes a timer which is activated by a signal from a call continuation button within the portable handset of the radio telephone. The timer counts the response time during which the radio telephone is switched to a stand-by mode and the speech loop is interrupted. The speech loop with the portable handpiece is re-established and the telephone is switched back into the call mode when the response time has elapsed.
