The invention relates to the testing and optimisation of chemically, physico-chemically and physically active measures for preventing the precipitation or fixed adhesion of scale or fur. It is based on boiling preferably 10 to 20 l of water which has been treated or to which additives have been added, and determining the calcium and magnesium ions in the form adhering firmly to the immersion heater as scale, and furthermore as an easily floatable component in the distillation vessel and as a solids component, which can be dissolved only by acid, in the wall of the distillation vessel. The less the actual scale component and the more the easily floatable component precipitate, the more effective the treatment measures are seen to be by logical assessment. The water is in this case distilled by controlled supply at constant power consumption of the immersion heater, and the calcium and magnesium ions are subsequently examined, separated by adhesion range, by atomic absorption spectroscopy.
