Traditional school lighting systems in use today generally follow design guidelines that are 30 or moreyears old. For their time, they were appropriate. Two new events have significantly changed therequirements for school lighting. First is the recent upsurge of computer use in schools and theassociated problems caused by glare from traditional lighting. The second is the urgent demand forenergy saving. School Boards now require energy costs in schools to be reduced, without anyreduction in utility. This invention satisfies both of these situations: Firstly, it provides low glare indirectand controlled direct lighting suitable for computer environments and is also adequate for traditionalpen and paper tasks. Secondly, it saves energy by using a single fluorescent lamp, where conventionalschool lighting systems use two lamps, and it still provides adequate lighting. These results areachieved by utilizing the internal surfaces of the fixture as reflecting surfaces, in a specific geometry.This geometry makes full use of all available light output to produce the required light pattern ofuplight and downlight. This also maximizes efficiency.
