PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten braking distance to stop a car avoiding an obstruction with a driver feeling danger to suddenly brake during normal travel by installing a braking device shifting the gear of an automobile during forward travel into reverse so as to reversely rotate tires to stop the automobile. ;SOLUTION: In the case of a driver depressing a brake pedal with strong force sensing danger during forward travel, a clutch is automatically cut off in a manual vehicle to shift into reverse gear. In an automatic vehicle, on the other hand, in the case of traveling in the drive, second, low and neutral positions of the gear, the gear is automatically put into reverse. In both manual and automatic vehicles, tires are reversely rotated in association with engine torque from the instant of shifting into reverse gear to the stop of the vehicle, thus stopping the vehicle. Accordingly, even in the case of braking hard, braking distance is shortened without locking the tires, and the vehicle can be stopped avoiding an obstruction.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
