PURPOSE:To allow a steel for metal mold to combine superior machinability with rusting resistance by adding small amounts of S to a low- or medium-C martensitic stainless steel and dispersing MnS into a matrix. CONSTITUTION:A stainless steel for metal mold has a composition consisting of, by weight, 0.20-0.50% C, =2.00% Si, =3.00% Mn, 0.02-0.15% S, =3.00% Ni, 14.00-17.00% Cr, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities and satisfying Cr/C=35. Further, if necessary, =3.00% Cu and/or =3.00% Co and further =0.10%, in total, of one or more kinds among =0.01% Ca, =0.10% Ce, =0.10% Se, and =0.10% Zr are incorporated. In the above composition, fine MnS is uniformly dispersed into a matrix and HRC is regulated to about 30 by means of heat treatment.
