Production of optionally ring-halogenated mono- and/or bis(mono-, di- and/or trichloromethyl)-benzenes (I) comprises progressive chlorination of the corresponding mono- or dimethylbenzenes (II) in a cascade of reactors, where the volume of the first reactor is greater than that of each other reactor, and all of the residual gas from the other reactors is recycled to the first reactor.
