A self-adressable, self-assembling microelectronic device is designed andfabricated to actively carry out and control multi-step and multiplexmolecular biological reactions in microscopic formats. These reactions includenucleic acid hybridizations, antibody/antigen reactions, diagnostics, andbiopolymer synthesis. The device can be fabricated using both micro-lithographic and micro-machining techniques. The device can electronicallycontrol the transport and attachment of specific binding entities to specificmicro-locations. The specific binding entities include molecular biologicalmolecules such as nucleic acids and polypeptides. The device can subsequentlycontrol the transport and reaction of analytes or reactants at the addressedspecific micro-locations. The device is able to concentrate analytes andreactants, remove non-specifically bound molecules, provide stringency controlfor DNA hybridization reactions, and improve the detection of analytes. Thedevice can be electronically replicated.
