PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make full use of the capability of a coil by disposing a high-temperature superconducting wire relative to the direction of magnetic field thereof so as to maximize the critical current. ;SOLUTION: A characteristic of critical current is that a critical current of a magnetic field which is parallel with a tape surface is much larger than that of a magnetic field perpendicular to the tape surface. Therefore, a high-temperature superconducting coil 1 is wound flat around a coil cross section 2, at a position having a maximum magnetic flux density in a direction A of the magnetic lines of force (a). Furthermore, the high-temperature superconducting coil 1 includes the coil section 2 having a small thickness in a diameter direction, and the coil cross section 2 has an extremely small aspect ratio in a direction B of the magnetic lines of force at a position which has maximum magnetic flux density for the coil cross section (b). Moreover, in the high- temperature superconducting coil, magnetic flux density is larger around the surface of the coil 1, as compared with the center of the coil cross section 2. Thus, a superconducting wire around the surface of such a coil is disposed along the direction of the corresponding magnetic lines of force.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2000,JPO
