Fuel cell process gas humidifying and compressing equipment, comprising a membrane humidifier and a side channel type compressor with an integrated humidifier, is new. An Independent claim is also included for a method of operating a fuel cell unit in which process gas is passed through a side channel type compressor with an integrated humidifier and then through a membrane humidifier prior to conversion in a fuel cell stack. Preferred Features: The process gas is the oxidizing gas (air) stream and is humidified with water recovered from the fuel cell off-gas.
