The suction roller with a controlled bending action has sliding shoes for the movements of the roller mantle against the center core. Each sliding shoe (22) has a support ring (20,24) against the inner surface of the roller mantle (18), with an inwards sliding surface (20'), with a smaller dia. than the inner dia. of the mantle (18). The suction system has a suction box (16) between the support rings (20,24), each self-supporting on the roller core (12), linked to a suction channel (17) at the core (12). The separate support rings (20,24) have a disk-shaped ring section (24) fitted to the inner surface of the roller mantle (18), with a bush (20) fitted to it with an inner cylinder surface forming the sliding surface (20') for the sliding shoe (22). Each sliding ring (20,24) is with a group of two or more sliding shoes (22). The inner dia. of the sliding surface (20') of the support rings (20,24) is 60-85% of the inner dia. of the roller mantle (18) and pref. 70-80%. The largest dia. of the roller core (12) is 85-98% of the dia. of the sliding surface (20') at the support rings (20,24), and pref. 90-96%. The separate support rings (20,24) are mounted to the roller mantle (18) by radial fittings, as a bolt inserted into the support ring (20,24) and a recess at the roller mantle (18), so that the bolt can be screwed out of the support ring (20,24). Each support ring (20,24) has grooves at the inner surface of the roller mantle (18) to apply a vacuum to the covered holes in the mantle. The separate sliding surfaces (20') are defined by seals (26,28), on both sides, between the roller core (12) and the support rings (20,24).
