The suction roller with a controlled bending action has sliding shoes for the movements of the roller mantle against the center core. Each sliding shoe (22) has a support ring (20,24) against the inner surface of the roller mantle (18), with an inwards sliding surface (20'), with a smaller dia. than the inner dia. of the mantle (18). The suction system has a suction box (16) between the support rings (20,24), each self-supporting on the roller core (12), linked to a suction channel (17) at the core (12). The separate support rings (20,24) have a disk-shaped ring section (24) fitted to the inner surface of the roller mantle (18), with a bush (20) fitted to it with an inner cylinder surface forming the sliding surface (20') for the sliding shoe (22). Each support ring (20,24) has grooves at the inner surface of the roller mantle (18) to apply a vacuum to the covered holes in the mantle.
