Instabilities occur with many types of laser due to operating conditions and include so-called Q-switching, relaxation oscillation or spiking (switching instabilities)., and in certain conditions can lead to damage or even destruction of the units in the laser. Fast laser instabilities can be controlled or regulated by feedback techniques, with a fraction of the laser output signal regulated by active feedback such that it is fed to the laser input so that the laser output power averaged over the resonator rotation time remains constant.
