Purified acid form (I) of peroxyredoxin, or its fragments or functional equivalents, comprises a specific 11-amino acid motif (S1) close to the active site. Pro-Xaa2-Asp-Phe-Thr-Xaa6-Val-Xaa8-Xaa9-Thr-Glu (S1). Where: Xaa2 = any amino acid; Xaa6 = Phe or Pro; Xaa8 = Pro or Thr; and Xaa9 = cysteine sulfinic or sulfonic acid Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) an antibody (Ab) immunospecific for (I); (2) a reagent for detecting and/or measuring (I) that contains at least one Ab; (3) detecting (M1) and/or measuring (I) in a biological sample; (4) diagnosing (M2) a metabolic disorder associated with oxidative stress by in vitro determination of the ratio of (I) to the native form (Ia) of peroxyredoxin; (5) a (e) kit for performing M2; and (6) an in vitro method (M3) for selecting compounds that stimulate or inhibit formation of (I).
