A tension device for indentation (17) on the surface (19) of a printing cylinder (18) in the printing apparatus of a rotary printing press is described. The printing cylinder contains a tension channel (16) for the accommodation of the ends (17) and a tension shaft (8) is accommodated in a hole with a diameter (26) of the cylinder. The tension shaft is held under tension by tension elements (36,37). The locking and unlocking of a tension element on the tension shaft takes place by cylinders (2) acted upon by fluid whose operating pressure can be adjusted via a separate adjusting cylinder (1). A hole (35) in the tension shaft communicates with a piston element (3) of the adjusting cylinder via a pressure line (9).
