A process is provided to improve reproductive performance in a companion animal such as a dog or cat by feeding the animal a diet including omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids in a ratio of about 3.5: 1 to about 12.5: 1. When an animal is fed the diet of the present invention, the status of essential fatty acid in the animal is maintained, and the litter size is maintained through subsequent paridelas.
