The seal for the shaft (7) of a hydrogen-cooled turbogenerator comprises a mounting (15) containing a sealing ring (19) which surrounds the shaft, leaving an annular gap (31). The ring has a lip (47) on one or both sides which projects into a recess in the mounting and a ring seal (45) is mounted in the recess below the lip. An Independent claim is included for a hydrogen-cooled turbogenerator fitted with the seal.
