A method for detecting spinal column process position in an image display, involves preparing a group of structure prototypes for several process positions and orientations, preparing an input display image with regard to the process positioning and orientations to be analyzed, and determining the intensity curves for the process in the input image. The intensity curves are then transformed to determine a structural vector for the process in the input display image, and then correlating the structure vector with the structure prototypes, in order to determine the most probable position and orientation of the process.
