A rare earth metal macropolycyclic complex (I), comprising at least one rare earth metal (II) salt complexed with a macropolycyclic compound (III), is new. A rare earth metal macropolycyclic complex (I), comprising at least one rare earth metal (II) salt complexed with a macropolycyclic compound of formula(III): Z = an atom with 3 or 4 valencies; R = nothing or represents H, -OH, -NH2 or hydrocarbon radical; A, B, C' = divalent hydrocarbon chain radical, optionally containing one or more heteroatoms and optionally interrupted with a heteromacrocycle; at least one of the radical A,B and C' also comprise one molecular unit or a molecular unit having a triplet energy which is greater than that of the emission level of the complexed rare earth metal ion; at least one of the radicals A, B and C' which does not comprise or does not consist essentially of the molecular unit comprises a pyridine radical substituted one or more times or, unsubstituted and the radical(s) A, B and C' other than the radical is substituted with an electron-donating group An Independent claim is also included for a fluorescent conjugate, comprising (I) bonded covalently to one of the members of a pair of molecules capable of bonding together, in particular a polypeptide, protein, cell receptor, antigen, antibody or nucleic acid.
