PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain small virus capable of growing and lysing algae by specifically infecting red tide plankton, provide a method for controlling the red tide using the virus, obtain an agent for controlling a red tide, provide methods for isolating, extracting, successively subculturing, freeze-preserving and concentrating the virus.;SOLUTION: The virus grows by specifically infecting algae of the genus Heterocapsa and has a particle size of 0.1 μm. The method for isolating the virus includes a process to filter a liquid sample containing the virus with a filter having a pore size of 0.1 μm, inoculate the filtrate to a culture solution of algae of the genus Heterocapsa and culture the filtrate and cloning the virus by diluting the culture solution in which lysis of the algae of the genus Heterocapsa is observed. The red tide-controlling agent contains the virus as an effective component. The method for controlling the red tide is to scatter the virus in a red tide area.
