PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of measuring a layer height level inside a waste pyrolysis furnace capable of finding the layer height level precisely and stably, to provide the waste pyrolysis furnace capable of continuing an operation stably, and to provide an operation method for the waste pyrolysis furnace.;SOLUTION: A plurality of stages of monitoring ports 32 are provided in a lower side wall of the waste pyrolysis furnace 10, an inside of the furnace is monitored by any of an image picking-up device, a luminance meter, a color measuring instrument and an infrared sensor, and whether a level of the monitoring port in each stage is in a level of a waste deposition layer level or a space level is determined based on average brightness of an image, brightness thereof, a chromaticity number thereof, an infrared ray quantity and emissivity thereof, so as to find layer height level.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
